‘White Giant’ + 290kg of explosives: Skyscraper demolition in Germany

A 20-story building called the “White Giant” was demolished in Duisburg’s Hochheide on Sunday.
At 12:00 local time, around 290 kilograms (639 pounds) of explosives were used to blast the block of flats into a pile of rubble.
Up to 600 field workers, including police, firefighters and 200 public order officers worked on the site, according to local officials.
Officials said the demolition required several months of preparation. Around 2,500 residents in the area had been evacuated.
The building, built in 1972, is among the six skyscrapers that Duisburg plants to demolish in order to upgrade the district. A park is set to be created on the site.
